One Child Policy in China

The one-child policy, officially the family planning policy, is the population control policy of the People's Republic of China which limits couples to one child. It was introduced in 1979 to alleviate social, economic, and environmental problems in China. Demographers estimate that the policy averted 200 million births between 1979 and 2009. The one child policy has its benefits, but also several disadvantages, some of which are listed below.

Pros:

  1. Social problems alleviation
  2. Poverty eradication
  3. Reduce number of population

Cons:

  1. Forces abortions and Human Rights violation.
  2. Brings Birth Tourism
  3. "Four-two-one" problem
As the first generation of law-enforced only-children came of age for becoming parents themselves, one adult child was left with having to provide support for his or her two parents and four grandparents. Called the “4-2-1 Problem”, this leaves the older generations with increased chances of dependency on retirement funds or charity in order to receive support. If personal savings, pensions, or state welfare fails, most senior citizens would be left entirely dependent upon their very small family or neighbours for assistance.
  4. Possible social problems for a generation of only children                                              Some parents may over-indulge their only child. Since the 1990s, some people have worried that this will result in a higher tendency toward poor social communication and cooperation skills among the new generation, as they have no siblings at home.

The government has relaxed the policy by allowing families to have two children if one of the parents is an only child. However, personally, I think that the One Child Policy should be removed. As seen from above, although there are some advantages, there are also many negative sides such as violations of Humans Rights. I believe that there would be other ways to control China's population size instead of the One Child Policy, which have resulted in forced abortions and much more serious problems such as the "Four-two-one" problem.

Chingay Presentation (Reflection)

Constance:
Through this chingay presentation, I have gained a lot more knowledge about Chingay. Previously, I did not know much of Chingay as I had never been to one before. However, through the trip to Chingay and the many presentations that I have seen, as well as my own, I have understood a lot more about Chingay.
Another thing that I have definitely learned through this presentation is to prepare and not be last minute. Even though our group had much more time than most groups, I would say we did not do a very good job, or at least, I did not. We were pretty last minute in doing the scripts and slides, and we did not even really have one full dry run before the actual presentation. That is probably why I was pretty nervous during the presentation, and was not that loud enough at certain times. I kept looking at the script too, could not memorise it. I think the audience, our classmates also felt quite bored listening to our presentation.. which is not a good thing. All this was probably due to our unpreparedness and last minute work.
Through these presentations,  i have definitely seen the hard work put in by our classmates and have learnt many skills, which would definitely be of use in future presentations. :D

Sean:
After this chingay presentation. , I have learnt that we should NEVER EVER procrastinate . It was because of our procrastination that lead to a not so good presentation . We didn't memorise our scripts , we were nervous , and the way we spoke wasn't nice.
We procrastinated because we thought we had a lot of time but we didn't. We procrastinated because we thought everything would be done in a blink of an eye . We proscrastinated because we thought everything would go out well but it didn't.
We had weeks for us to write out our scripts and memorize them at the back of our hands, which was quite a lot of time. But because of our procrastination , we were left with about around 15 hours of preparation time . Which was not a lot . 6 out of that 15 hours were sleeping time , and some was taken up by lessons , leaving us very very little time.
During the presentation , I tried to sound confident , but it was too obvious. I didn't have enough practice. I couldn't remember my lines and had to keep looking at my script. That certainly did affect the way I delivered the my lines. As I forgot my lines over and over again , I started to tense up , feeling lost , not knowing what to do . That caused me to start losing my confidence , and hence getting me more nervous.
I got back by telling myself that I could do it , and things started to get better , but at the end of the presentation , I knew that it wasn't a good one . In conclusion , it is really really important to prepare and NEVER procrastinate even if you feel u have a lot of time left to do your assignment/homework/project .

Cherlyn:
Thought the CID Chingay presentation, I learnt many things that I may not even realise myself despite doing several presentations already. These things were all simple little basics that everyone knew and I thought that I knew too and had it at the back of my hand, but I was wrong. I didn't have proper time management and I didn't manage to relax and give a good presentation.
Time management, it is something basic that teachers repeat and repeat all the time  when talking about projects, homework, play time, etc. Time management seemed really easy like abc however my group showed no proper time management during the project. Thinking that we had all the time in the world, we kept dragging on and none of the meet ups we had for the project was effective and productive. Thus, we were unable to complete the project to satisfaction and only finished the day before the actual presentation. Therefore, we had little mental preparation and were all not familiarized with everything. However thankfully the presentation turned out okay.
During the whole presentation, I was nervous and was all tensed up that many of my words were pronounced wrongly and I was shivering in fear internally. This caused me to be unable to present well for the presentation. However, gradually, I became more relax as the atmosphere in the class was light hearted and gave me a sense of security that presentation was not that scary. Thus I began to relax and spoke more naturally and louder. Thus, it really showed that it pays to relax during the presentation.
In conclusion , I have learnt many thing from the project we did this time and it was indeed a wake up call for us that we were no longer year ones and should have much proper time management for everything regardless of projects or homework, etc. Not only that, I learnt to relax and be natural during presentation as tensing up has no benefits but instead harm.

Yuling:
Through all the Chingay presentations, I've certainly learnt a lot. All the things I already knew beforehand, though. But by (not quite)putting the skills I've learnt into practice and watching others do the same, I finally realise that these skills do not come quite as naturally as I thought it would. One invaluable lesson I learnt through this was the importance of time management. At the start, my group thought we had all the time in the world to prepare and hence kind of did nothing. Much. It was not until the last minute did we finally begin to be serious and actually start on our script and all. Needless to say, we were all very flustered and stressed throughout that period and all of us certainly regretted not starting earlier. I was constantly awed by other groups' presentations and by how people managed to deliver their lines so eloquently. They were prepared and confident of their parts and thus was able to give a good presentation. This led me to realise another important thing to have for a good presentation: preparedness. Frankly speaking, our group wasn't very much prepared. Not at all. And it showed through our presentation. We didn't have much time to practise and I received comments later on like how I was too soft and too quick. Well, now I know. Even though it is too late to change my performance during the presentation, it certainly isn't for me to learn from this time's experience and strive to do better next time.

Shin Ru:
This Chingay presentation made me aware of many things, and taught me invaluable lessons. First lesson: PREPARE PREPARE PREPARE. One of the most important things in order to have a good presentation is preparation. Once you prepare, everything will seem easy to you, thus making you feel confident and naturally, you will speak better. I, unfortunately, did not prepare...much and so I kind of made mistakes... many mistakes. Luckily, I managed to save them at the last minute, through a joke or something. Our group, also unfortunately, did not manage to capture the audience's attention much... :( I tried my best to make some jokes but I don't think they helped much... This brings me to my second lesson; engaging the audience is very important... thus be NATURAL~. Being natural will engage your audience as they feel that you are conversing with them, so they will pay attention to your presentation. On another topic, I find that having a naturally loud voice is rather beneficial during oral presentations, compared to softer voices. Well, I really learnt alot from this oral presentation, ranging from skills(confidence, natural, etc) to values that are really important for us to have(determination, blabla). They really widened my perspective on the different kinds of oral presentations possible too~like the serious kind(rather boring though), the not so serious kind, and the skit kind. My classmates' presentations were all interesting in their own way and surprisingly, I got to see some of their other 'sides' as they presented, like usually being all shy and quiet, but during the presentation, suddenly being confident and loud. This inspired me to improve my own oral skills. I will definitely put these skills and values to use in the future, like the post-trip presentation:3.
